In our situation, living in the mountains where power outages are typically due to downed trees/wires, this phone does work without power. Apparently there is battery back up for the phone landline. However, if our power is off for more than a day the phone usually goes dead too. It is still useful to have.

Yes, this phone requires no external power from batteries or a household power outlet. 

If you are using something like VOIP you should makes sure that any equipment used for that has backup power. This phone does not require it though.
