nope, they work on they own. No Need for a smart plug

You need a smart plug to control with voice systems (Alexa, etc.) But you can fully control the lights with just the app.
I will say that I am having issues connecting mine to my Alexa

The smart plug is needed if you are wanting to use voice control to an external device such as an Alexa smart speaker.
