Hey Cathy, thank you for reaching out to us. The difference between the two would be the range bluetooth only has a certain range where as the direct connect lights link up to your wifi network on the 2.4ghz frequency band. You do not need a mesh router to use them and mesh routers can cause conflicts if broadcasting 5g signal this can easily be disabled momentarily though and turned back on once the devices are paired to the 2.4ghz frequency.
