If you wire it to a constant live circuit the unit goes into sleep mode when you turn of the ignition (eg park the vehicle). The unit will then begin recording if it senses any movement and it will stop recording and go into sleep mode if there is a period of time without it sensing any motion. The unit also has a battery power monitoring function that will stop the monitoring and recording functions if it senses that the car battery is being depleted. If you wire it to a switched circuit (power when the ignition is on) the unit turns off and the monitoring and recording functions are not available.
