The actual charger is very compact, so yes using it to charge on the counter would be easy. There is a plastic piece that can be mounted on the wall so that you can hang and charge the vacuum while stored. This plastic piece does not need to be used, but is convenient for people who have a broom closet that would accommodate it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Battery is in the handle. Maybe you can take it out, but I haven't seen it. The charger is about 1"X3"X2" (roughly, I didn't measure). It's gray, plugs into the wall outlet, and then a cord runs to the wall mounted bracket, where the vacuum is stored. When you hang the vacuum in the bracket, the plug on the end of the cord goes into vacuum to charge it. You could charge it on a counter, if you didn't want to use the wall bracket, but it's real handy.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The wall mounting unit is about 10" long, 6" wide (estimating from memory; I'm not at home). I keep it mounted on the wall at all times in the laundry room and never have to worry about where I am going to sit the vacuum when not in use. If you didn't want to mount it, the plug/cord could be used just on the counter as you mentioned but then you would have to store it, as well as the vacuum somewhere when not in use. I think this would be cumbersome because the vacuum doesn't really stand well on its own. Unlike a freestanding upright vacuum, i think this is specifically designed to be stored on the wall charging base. Hope that helps!
