“I have a Netgear C7000 Router/modem combo. Saw several questions and answers on this but want to clarify. Will I loose anything connecting to the router/modem hardwire and turning off the wifi portion of the router? Or better to get new modem?”

The Netgear C7000 came out in 2015. So if yours is more than 2-3 years old...I'd replace it with a new modem. If you want to reuse your C7000...what you are trying to do is to put the device in "bridge" mode. This will turn off the wifi as you suggested PLUS it will turn off the router function...leaving you with only the modem function that you need.
