The Verizon modem is still needed; however, the WiFi on the modem is completely replaced by this product. The Eero Pro is not a modem. It is only a router. So, it takes the signal from the modem and extends it throughout the home.

YES!!! We did the same thing. I did have to buy an Ethernet switch because the mesh only has 2 ports in the back, but this is a great system. It will replace your rental.
