Do you need a router or modem in this system? null

The eero Pro is a router so no other router needed. You do need a separate modem to which to connect the eero Pro.

You need a cable modem...i bought a good netgear CM700 which works well with it

Yes these are extensions of your router enabling you to get better reception in different parts of the house.I have noticed much better reception when using iphone ,computer etc.

You still need a modem but the eero system replaces your existing router. I am extremely pleased with the eeros performance and I would recommend this device for anyone with a large home and/or multiple smart home devices.
