They sell two different bases - one that is a bit like a bean bag and the other is more just a heavy flexible base that is designed to conform to the shape of the dash. Each have a base designed with a sticky rubber that keeps it in place - it does not leave any residue, nor is it permanent. I have both and prefer the one with the heavier flexible base. But I used the bean bag for many trips before I discovered the other one. Both work well.

The Garmin Portable Friction Mount, part number 010-10908-02, is an option to use in place of the Suction Cup mount.
