How does the messaging work? Do you pay for service? null

You subscribe through the inreach web site. There were several options for messaging. You just pick the one that suits your needs.

There is a monthly charge. People can track you from a link. They can then message you and you can send messages back. You also can set up phone numbers in your inreach and then message people through that. I used it on a 12 day solo kayak camping trip. I linked it and gave people a way to watch my progress and track me. Strangers were able to message me with encouraging words. It was awesome.

Yes log on to garmin inreach and look at plans pricing very reasonable includes Texts,and includes emergency helicopters rescue for a reasonable fee very worthy product

You would have to activate a subscription to get messaging and SOS to work on the device. You are charged 1 message per sent and received messages.
