Hi Kglunt. To clarify, the nuvi 2597LMT does not come with a micro SD card in the box. The device does have internal memory, however, a micro SD card can be inserted into the device to add memory, if necessary for map updates, storing additional maps, waypoints, and routes. We typically recommend using an 8 GB card for storing map updates. Depending on the space needed and what is being stored, the device is compatible with smaller capacity cards such as 2 GB, up to a maximum of 32 GB micro SD card. Thanks for asking. *CG

The map updates will eventually use up the space on the unit and you will need one to continue getting map updates. There is no smallest, it is just a matter of what you need for the future updates. Also if you want to store other things on the GPS you need to take that into account too.
