“Is there a way to remove the agitator to clean it out? It is caked up with old fabric softener and dark chips are coming out during the wash. I've tried flushing it several times and reaching inside to wipe it out, but I can't get to the bottom.”

You will not be able to remove the agitator. To properly clean your unit, please review the "Care And Cleaning - Washer" section on pg. 13 of the Owner's Manual. -Don@GEAppliances
