Our unit is installed in a small closet built to accommodate it. Fit snugly against the back wall, the front of the unit is 34 1/2” from the back wall. 34 12” includes the space for wiring/piping. If I was going to rebuild this, I’d try to allow a couple extra inches. I think 35 1/2 to 37 would be idel for front back space, but 34 1/2 works for us. We are very pleased with the product.

We suggest to view Quick Specs for product dimensions at the following link: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=GUD27ESSM_27GSSM_C3_17.pdf - For side venting, 3 additional inches of room depth are needed versus the unit depth shown in the manual. The vent needs to go down first and then to the left or to the right (the hot/cold lines don't block the duct). One elbow (plus the straight ductwork) is enough to make the side venting. The dryer is deeper in the rear than the washer. The overhang is 4" past the back panel of the washer, which means it sticks out past the vent, electrical, and plumbing connections. The dryer can sit up against a wall without adding any extra depth to the unit. This provides space for the connections in the rear. Because of this overhang, the unit does not need knockouts to vent to the left or right side. The vent elbow can be turned left, right, or down as needed.
