Hi - This is a great question! You can use the SmartDispense feature to store your favorite or most often used detergent. If you find occasion where you want to use a different type of detergent, press the SmartDispense pad on the control panel (the light will go out) and you can now add your detergent to the manual dispensers. For additional information see page 12 of the owner's manual. We do hope you choose this feature-packed washer for your home. Vikki@GEA

I don’t use the smart dispenser. I have hard water so I use a very small amount of detergent since I have a water softener .
