You have the option to use powder detergent if you would like. The SmartDispense is always on and uses only liquid detergent. You can turn that off with the push of a button for each load and there is a separate dispenser for liquid or powder detergent. The instructions explain it and all you have to do, besides pushing the button to turn off the SmartDispense, is move a small flap inside the liquid/powder dispenser and pour in the powder detergent. It is very simple.
