“I understand I must have WiFi in order to set up the unit. This answer was given - Your phone and the detector will need to be connected with the same wifi in order to communicate. Does this mean no mobile alerts when the homeowner is not at home?”

You can get notification when not on your home wifi network. Under settings there is a section for contacts, you can add yourself or your local fire department (local number not 911).
