You can more or less try it before buying it with an android phone, if you install the Google home app, you are able to link external smart devices and hub to your google account. Then you can talk to the assistant of your phone the same way you would talk to Home mini. It has less features of course, but it should do the same with external hubs. I just double checked in the compatible devices list and I can see an "Iris" icon, I didn't try it but I guess it means it should work! (You probably should try it first and not only assume it does.) To find the page in my screenshot: Open the android "Google Home" app > top left menu > more settings > Home control > blue + button

If you are looking into Nest, then the integration will be far more seamless as Nest is under Alphabet which owns Google and Nest.
