Hi! Most external drives don’t need set ups anymore. They look about the size of a cell phone and come with their own usb cable (It’s usually short, so it sits right next to your laptop. If you have a tower you might need to get a long cable so it sits nicely while it’s in use). Your new external hard drive acts just like another drive on your computer only it’s portable. So your hard drive is “C”, if you have additional memory you may have “D”, “E” even. You’ll notice in Computer section that is shows Drives, and other hardware items like printers and mouse. When connecting for the first time: have the Computer section open so you can see which drive it is. Then when backing up choose that drive as the location. Be wise on your back up formatting, think about it in long term storage format and retrieval ways. I personally have everything in My Documents, so I only have to save that file to capture my data and I add the file to a Dated folder in the external drive. I keep three dated backups, deleting the oldest as I add a new one. example: 2018.01.22 My Documents Well good luck.
