• Hi Irene, thank you for your question. This adapter will only work if your current thermostat is using at least 4 wires. If you have a heat only 24 V system with 2 wires you will not be able to use this C wire adapter. The C wire adapter and our Wi-Fi thermostats do not require batteries. - Maria
