This laptop should be plenty for first-year students (maybe two or more, depending on major) - it's lightweight and a bit small but still great for papers, email, general internet use, streaming video, and most things that typical college kids do. Engineering students will need something more powerful if they choose to run CAD and other resource-intensive software. It doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, but that's not much of an issue these days since most any software is available for internet download. It doesn't include Microsoft Office, but your student may not need it - that'll depend on the instructor and the course. Many colleges have this sort of software available for use in computer labs, though, and there's free software available that will work just as well (again, depending on instructor and course) - Open Office and Libre Office are two options. I would not subscribe to whatever free-trial antivirus software is preinstalled - that software is generally bloated and will hog system resources, slowing the computer down over time. It's also overpriced. My recommendation is either ESET or Malwarebytes. I just checked the price on this, and I see that it's $299. That's a pretty good price, in my opinion, for what you're getting.
