• I personally use an external drive. Just to keep some space freed up to do the multitasking I need as a small business owner and it's perfect. So it should be okay for college.

• You don't necessarily need the speed of the SSD for school work, and might benefit from the added storage in an HDD. But performance-wise, either choice will work well for you.
