“Can you still print in black if color cartridge is empty? I had a problem with a different brand that had individual black and 3 color cartridges. I don't print often so when I would try to print or copy in black the color cartridges were all dried up. The printer would not print when I just put in a new black cartridge, all 4 needed to be replaced or no copies would print.”

• Yes. When you hit print it will show if it's being printed in color or black. If you want to change its a dropdown on main screen.

• Yes. I believe the empty cartridge needs to be out or the machine insist on you know it's low.

• The cartridges I use are HP, specifically for my printer...there are two separate cartridges (1 color, 1 BW) and if one runs out (usually the black goes first), I replace just that one... You mentioned the cartridges being "dried up"...my suggestion would be to contact the place you purchased them...if it was Best Buy, I would be very surprised if they didn't replace them...if it was not Best Buy...I think I'd change over..they may be a bit pricier, but if they print, it's worth it...to me, anyway..
