• When I purchased this printer I was told by the salesman that a feature of it was that you could even take the color cartridge out and it would still print using the black ink only.

• I haven't tried to scan without cartridges in the printer, but since scanning uses no ink it should work. That's what logic would dictate but when dealing with computers and peripherals, you can't always depend on logic.

• Not sure why you are having this problem in the printer settings there is an option which can be unchecked to allow for one side printing.
