• Yes you can print just black and white without refilling the tricolor cartridge. But dont take out the empty color cartridge from its slot.

• When printing, change preferences to black and white and you will not need to use color cartridges.

• Yes... I also opt for this on most of my printing to save my color ink. It is very easy... The choice is in front panel of printer and all you have to do is push black and white option.

• I rarely use the color cartridges but I have had them run out and was able to print in black and white without a problem.
