I took the headphone/speaker out on the TV itself and no matter what goes into your television you'll have 2 amplifier stages to boost the sound beyond your listening limits.

My guess is the cord degradation to your dvd player is the issue (the one going from the dvd player to your tv). You're probably using a composite cord for that, which has lower audio capability than an optical cord for your soundbar. Without more info, this is all I have on the subject.

It probably has more to do with the DVD player than the Sound bar. Different devices have different output gain (volume) Sounds like the DVD player you have has a low output volume coming into your Sound bar. If you have a different DVD player, maybe try that and see if it is different.
