• If you are talking about the Drum, then yes, there is supposed to be a space. The drum is connected to a leveling/stabilization system, that helps dampen vibration and also quiets the washing process. Because of this, the drum moves, and needs that space to do so.

• Yes the open space is where you grab the lid to open it.
