The device is a physical connection. It must be plugged into a USB3 port to function well, albeit a USB2 or one will work, just WAY slower. then, you plug in the devices you want to function on your network. They should auto be recognized by computer or smart TV, but may require software or specific LOC inputs, i.e. IP numbers, i.e. 125.22.33.444 etc. Tyhos are NOT WORKABLE settings, just examples That said, MINE worked for first week then stopped. Could be the lousy cable, as the lights indicate it is powered up, 24/7, which can be corrected by pluging the power supply of the device into a switchable surge protector, i.e. Belkin makes a good Desk top unit. One more caution. ANY static electricity can and most likely will FRY your transistorized equipment. Suggest you discharge before handling these items.INC your computer.
