I would have to say that no matter what it is, if there's any liquid in it, you run the risk of a leak whether you put it on a hardwood floor or anywhere else. If you live in a humid area, you might find condensation problems (though I don't think that'll be an issue), but I'm in a desert and there's no leakage on my hardwood floor. If it concerns you, maybe find a tray, similar to the ones they use under a water heater, to place it on. You won't obscure any controls or anything if the edges stay under 6 inches tall. There is a drain hole on the front about an inch from the ground, but that's what you want to keep in the tray anyway.
