“Some reviewers think the unit is noisy and some think it is quiet...hmm. Noise is an issue because of where it will be placed. Can anyone out there try to quantify the noise level, i.e, can one sit next to it and watch TV or have a conversation?”

It does have a low hum. Yet I can barely hear it over the voices in my head.

I don't notice when it turns on or off unless I get up and go over to it and try to listen for a sound. It is quieter than my refrigerator. It doesn't distract me when I read my books or do stuff on my computer. My freezer is very quiet and yours should be quiet as well. Other than being very good at keeping stuff frozen solid, being very quiet is one of the things I really like about this freezer.
