Kegs come preasurized but as you pour beer the preasure would slowly be less and less. CO2 into the tank maintains carbonation so you don't have flat beer. You will have to buy different keg connectors for cornelius kegs that many home brewers use.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It does have some pressure already in the keg from carbonation. This disappears after the first 10% or so of the beer has been tapped. The co2 is needed to keep the pressure up to drive the beer out of the keg. It also keeps it carbonated so that it does not go flat and prevents germs from breaking out and spoiling the beer. I do not know about home brew barrels as I have never used them.
