“Is the "male" end of the card reader standard usb size similar to what is on my desktop, or is it similar to the Samsung charger port?”

The USB connector on the Insignia reader (and writer -- I don't know why they don't say reader/writer) is a type A connector -- exactly like what you'd find on a flash drive.

The male end is a standard USB. You can buy an adaptor that has a universal micro charger on one end and a "female" USB on the other. Then plug into your phone. Works on my Samsung Galaxy S7 phone perfectly. See picture. Hope this helped.

It's a standard USB, not micro USB which is what the cable size is for the samsung charger.
