Noelle, I got "plug and play" performance with a 2012 13" MacBook Pro and with a 2018 15" MacBook Pro using Mac OS 10.12.6 and MacOS 10.14.4. Please, share your computer's OS version and hardware version (from "About This Mac" in the Apple menu). That may help someone help you.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Maybe you have a refurbished unit, because the card reader shouldn’t have a name assigned to it. Check the Get Info option in Finder or Device Manager, and see if you can change it. But if it’s good, it should just load the card storage. Are you inserting the card before plugging it into your computer?
