It will work on a laptop with a slow port. I don't think you would need to disable the old port, but you won't want to use both ports at the same time.

Windows will generate a new internal ID for this Ethernet adapter which will not cause a conflict with your existing ethernet. You will notice if you connect to your network. The command is ipconfig /all your Ethernet adapter may appear as Ethernet 2.
