It will work on a laptop with a slow port. I don't think you would need to disable the old port, but you won't want to use both ports at the same time.

It should work. My system had no issues using the network port. I am able to get the full 1G speed of my internet.

This adapter shall work with any laptop computer even you have an internal Ethernet. Windows will generate a new internal ID for this Ethernet adapter which will not cause a conflict with your existing ethernet. You will notice if you connect to your network. The command is ipconfig /all your Ethernet adapter may appear as Ethernet 2.

I will not improve your ethernet connection because it relys on the same chip that you're saying it's causing the problem to begin with. 

This adapter is mainly used for laptops that don't have an ethernet port .
