• The AA batteries are for the zone preventer, the actual Roomba uses a rechargeable battery.

• The two AA batteries are for the sensor you can place near your stairs to prevent the robot from tumbling down. You can also put the sensor in a doorway you don't want it to go in. The robot itself comes with a rechargeable battery that you shouldn't need to mess with.
