No, it will purposelessly seek it out to get stuck. This machine is not effective in its cleaning. I put the sensor up to avoid my rug, and it went after it and got stuck 3 times in less than 10 minutes. There were new batteries in the sensor.

That object will either set up an invisible wall so the Roomba wont go past it or set up a half circle thatthe Roomba won't go near. If you look on the black box item itself, it will show a diagram and which position the switch needs to be in in order to turn on that particular function.
