“Would this be good for my alpine speakers? front has 240W peak and rear has 300W Peak. I'm being told to get the 800W Unit vs this 400w , but don't see why.”

Because 2 x 240W plus 2 x300W is more than the 400w amp could supply. Under powering speakers can harm the coils in it .
