They can be serviced independently but if one has to be replaced the entire unit has to be replaced. ^Daphane

It is one unit, both are repairable. The concern that if say the washer goes beyond repair after some years, yes you would have to replace the whole unit. But that is usually true for any stacked pairs as it is not recommended to stack machines not designed to be stacked with each other: if the washer goes beyond repair, how often are you able to find the same washer model designed to stack with your old dryer? And, would you want to buy the same old model again, even if you could?
