This soundbar also has a fiber optic port (cable included) and you can use that to attach your DVR as I have done to mine. As I understand it, an HD cable box could help with TV quality and sound. Anything connected to your TV HDMI port will play from your soundbar as long as you have the ARC port connected to the soundbar (get some quality HDMI cables). There is also blue tooth. Also, make sure your TV has "atmos" capability to get the most fulsome sound from the system.

The option I chose was to use the input on the soundbar for the component that would give me the best experience. In this case I used the Xbox One X since it supports 4K Blu Ray and the ability to output Dolby Atmos as well. No regrets doing that since that set up is giving me the best bang for my buck. The rest of my components such as, the PS4, Nintendo Switch and Apple TV are connected straight to the tv. When I want to listen to those with the soundbar I play them through the ARC source on the soundbar which will output all TV sound through the bar no matter where it is connected. It is probably not the ideal solution, but think about which source will give you the best sound fidelity. Just food for thought.
