  • QuestionI just bought the LG Ultra Slim DVD Writer with I idea that I could write on CD's from my computer. The message that I keep getting is you cannot write with this writer. It says that it is compatible with a Mac. What am I missing?

    • Answer The LG - 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black, Model # SP80NB80 has a TV Connectivity function that allows you to connect it to a TV to enjoy videos, photo and music files. The drive is defaulted in ODD mode when it is powered on. To take it out of ODD mode and put it in TV mode, you will need to press and hold the Eject’ button for 2 seconds with the tray open. The LED indicator will turn on, switching the unit to TV mode...^IFV

    • Answer Do not know, has a special standard USB plug for data/power. If the surface pro uses anything but a standard USB an adaptor or different plug for this same purpose would be required.

  • QuestionIs it compatible with Window 10 basic?

    • Answer I have mine working on Windows 10 the Home Personal version and it works fine. The loading of a disc is a bit clumsy but once you get used to it it's not a problem. I haven't tried writing to a disc but I have installed programs from it and it plays music discs with no problems.

The drive has a TV Connectivity function that allows you to enjoy videos, pictures and music by connecting this product to a compatible A/V device (e.g.DIGITAL TV, DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME, PC) that supports USB connectivity.It is defualted to ODD mode when it is powered on so you will need to switch it to TV mode to play it through a projector. The instructions for switching from ODD mode to TV mode can be found in the instruction manual that came with the unit...^IFV

    • Answer It can be used with a Chromebook but there are some major limitations to using a Chromebook with an external DVD or CD drive. Chrome OS does not support optical disks to let you play music or movies. The primary reason for this is that Chrome OS doesn’t come with codecs. Codecs are necessary to compress and decompress large files like DVD videos. If you want to play DVDs on your Chromebook, you’ll need to install Linux. Chrome OS can read files on these disks if they are supported file formats. This means you can easily open image or audio files in ChromeOS from files on a CD or DVD. However, you cannot play an audio CD or a movie on a DVD, and you cannot write anything to a CD, or DVD. External DVD drives aren’t officially supported on Chrome OS. ^Daphane

    • Answer It is possible to connect but there are limitations. You currently cannot watch DVD movies by default in Chrome OS. Unlike simple movie file formats that you might find online, playback of DVD Video requires special decoding software and codecs to work. Google has not licensed this software and included it with Chrome OS. A Chromebook will read the contents with no problem at all but there are some major limitations to using a Chromebook external DVD or CD drive. External devices are limited as to storage of readable files, and music files are not, without drivers, which cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Chrome OS can read files on these disks if they are a supported file formats such as • CD • CD-RW • DVD • DVD-RW. This means you can easily open image or audio files in ChromeOS from files on a CD or DVD. However, Chrome OS does not support optical disks to let you play music or movies. The primary reason for this is that Chrome OS doesn’t come with codecs. Codecs are necessary to compress and decompress large files like DVD videos.
