“When i plug my desktop into it using the ethernet port, my desktop connects fine but the extender signal goes away when I try to find it on other devices. Does that mean that the unit is only connecting to the main router and not beaming its own signals?”

U should do 1 of 2 things, either connect ur Ethernet cable directly from the modem to the computer or from the modem to the extender, this way the signal from the extender will put out a great signal.
