This is just one unit that you wear around your neck or on a belt clip. There is no base. It works on the Verizon network wherever you are able to connect to their service. There are lights on the back side that flash to confirm battery strength and cellular service are connected.

I have accidently triggered it once when I accidently pushed the alert button. They could hear me clearly and I could hear them clearly. You have to wear it with the lanyard to have the fall detection. It is not something you sit on the bedside table. You click it to your waistband, or wear it in your pocket, or around your neck.
