As part of the process of programming the Harmony remote, you have to download software from their website onto your computer. The “hole” is actually where the smaller end of the USB cable (included with the remote) is attached. The other end is plugged into your computer. It is very similar to charging cables for your smartphone, but the included cable functions as an interface between the remote and your computer. The downloaded software and the interface cable are required to program the remote.
