It operates best when connected to wifi. You will not even have to point the remote at the equipment you are operating. The distance it works is only limited by the range of your wifi network. I'm able to stand in my backyard and adjust the volume of my outside speakers without line-of-site to my receiver.

As long as the remote can see the Hub or the IR mini blasters which connect to the back of the Hub and helps extend the coverage area, then the distance can be pretty far. With the Hub, you can also contol devices using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
