SSD hard drive. It runs MacOS 11 Big Sur. It uses Apple’s new M1 system on chip with 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU; think of it as an iPad Pro processor on steroids. DRAM is closely coupled with the M1 and not upgradeable after the fact, but this tight integration makes it extremely performant.

The operating system is the new macOS Big Sur designed for the new Apple Silicon chip designed and marketed by Apple only; it's not an Intel chip like lots of other Apple's are. The M1 chip is the Silicon chip offered in this MacBook Air and this processor is blazing fast, much more efficient than any Intel chip offered in an Apple. This efficiency also results in very little waste heat, enabling this MacBook to be offered without any cooling vents whatsoever. It just has an internal heat sink for temperature regulation. My MacBook Air M1 has never gotten much above room temperature for the four moths I've owned it. There is also no possibility of overheating due to vent blockage which is very common on machines that are actually used on your lap. The memory is 8GB which is fine for this machine.
