“I am a 70 yr old retired, disabled veteran. I am totally new to VR. I am not a gamer, I just want to see the things that I will never be able to travel to see i.e. Grand canyon, Yellowstone, etc. Will I be able to do that on this equipment?”

I am 61, and I am not a real gamer, but I love my Oculus Quest 2. There are a number of free apps that will let you go to places, like out of space! And while no one could go out during the pandemic, you could talk to your friends through the apps on the system as if they were standing right in front of you. I love my Quest 2 and it is one of the more affordable game headsets out there.
