“Tried to buy one at my local Best Buy and they informed me that this controller has been discontinued and they will not be getting any more. Is there a chance we will see this product return, or is that a question best directed to Microsoft?”

I think you were misinformed. There was such high demand for this controller during the holidays. So much so, that it was out of stocked everywhere. Even at Microsoft website/stores. They are back in stock at some places. That being said, I've also heard of a newer version may be released sometime at the end of the year though too.
