The powerline take advantage of the residential electrical wiring o transmit the data and extend your coverage. This uses the existing wifi network to extend and push further. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Specifically with the powerline product there can be interference with other product in the home and they do not work well in apartments or shared multidwellings. As for the wifi you have to have it positioned in an area where there is decent coverage to extend out. Remember poo in poo out. Hope this helps.
