It depends on whether you are currently renting a modem/router combination. Most of the time the rental units from an Internet Service Provider act as a cable modem and wifi router in one. If you plug your cat6 cable into your current unit this will not work by itself. In that case you will have to buy a cable (or DSL if you have DSL) modem also. If you have a separate modem and run an Ethernet cable from it to your current router then this unit should work. Good Luck!
