Great router
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this as an upgrade from a router that was several years old, and I'm very satisfied with it! Much stronger signal that reaches areas of my house that were spotty before. Easy setup and no issues after a couple years of use. If you're being indecisive like me, this is your sign to just buy it!

I'd take a TP-Link over this
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this to replace my aging TP-Link Archer A7 and hoped to have some additional functionality. I'm far from a novice at setting up home networks and needed this to function as another router on a micronetwork in the house, to separate work devices from home devices. I regretted my purchase as soon as I started the setup. The QR code in the only "quick startup" documentation it had wasn't on the router so I started the manual setup. The mobile app refused to see it when I whether I was connected to the 2.4 or 5Ghz wifi so I went to the PC and started with the hardline setup. Once I finally got connected, the "advanced" setup automatically set it up as an access point without saying that's what it was doing. Ok, sure I was connected but I wasn't able to access the admin panel, at all, so factory reset. Get connected again, the UI is extremely slow. The initial setup completes and bam, instead of taking me to the admin panel it takes me to netgears website with how-to's. Completely unintuitive behavior. The mobile app still shows the router from when it initially set it to an access point and won't remove it, because it can't connect to it. Finally managed to remove it, somehow, I was beyond frustrated by this point. I logged back into the admin UI and there's no way to add a dark mode, it's a horrible white and insanely compact layout, I'm talking it would barely fill a 1280x1024 resolution screen. Trying to access any of the other tabs takes longer than loading reddit.com on 56k dialup. The actual functionality is ok but a far cry from what the TP-link has, and doesn't even have the traffic management that's indicated. It's useable, but barely. The mobile app, that's a joke. It takes forever to detect that you have a Netgear device on the network your connected to, took over 30 seconds to access the device once it was detected, you can't really change much of anything in the app so the only real use of it is to reboot it in the event you can't access it otherwise. oh, also, the lights. You can't dim them, you can't change the color. You either turn them all on, off, or only have the power LED. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't such an obnoxiously bright white. At least give us the option to dim them. At this point I'll go with any other router, and I mean ANY, in the future.

The intrusive Christmas Tree of Routers
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Router and wifi work OK so far but wasn't thrilled about the customer experience. My 12 year old Apple Airport Extreme gave out and needed something quick. I was not too happy the the Quickstart Guide in the box was simply a card that said to download an app. No manual (I have since obtained the manual online). Create an account, share email address ugh. Go through ad screens for additional software. More ughs. Barrage of emails on "days left for free security software" and offers for more paid services. App is so-so useful I suppose but would not miss it. Had I had the manual, would have simply access the router via ethernet and had it set up in less time. The coverage is about the same as the airport. Have a large lot and 3K SF home, covers everywhere. Apple was also gigabit. What I didn't expect is this thing lights up at night like Times Square. Have to keep the door to my home office closed at night. I've attached a pic of this Netgear next to the Apple, which only had one tiny amber/green light to show status. Oh, and it also had a 2Tb hard drive in it for backups. Maybe this is what all manufacturers provide these days. If so then I would change my "recommend to others" answer. Simpler is definitely better!

Q: Questionwireless range signalI have a fairly large house, how far can the wireless signal goes up to?
Asked by pat.
- A:Answer I have a two floor house and have signal everywhere, even outside. It's worth noting that the 5GHz band has a shorter range and you should use this for devices that support it and are fairly close to the router. The 2.4GHz band will have a better range but may suffer from some interferences that the 5GHz band does not.

Q: QuestionWith an internet speed of 200 mbs, what is the best type of wifi router to consider
Asked by Cook.
- A:Answer First things first. The answer depends on the rest of your devices that you want to use and how far away they are from the wireless access point of the router. 802.11g wireless devices max out at 54mbs 802.11n wireless devices max out at 450mbs 802.11ac wireless devices max out at 1330mbs No device can go faster than your internet provider will allow it to go. (A 802.11ac device will not go faster than 200mbs when it is connected to an internet connection of 200mbs.) The other thing to consider is how many wireless devices will be used at the same time. If you want to use more than one at the same time then you may want to get a MIMO (multiple input multiple output) wireless router. 2x2 = 2in 2out. 3x3 = 3in 3out. MIMO routers have multiple antennas. If all the devices are in the same room then you can use just a wireless router. If your devices are at opposite ends or on multiple floors of a building then you may be better served with a mesh system. Google WiFi, Nest Connect and eero are all mesh systems. Mesh systems use multiple access points that are placed throughout a building in locations that are in the same rooms that you will be using your wireless devices. Some mesh systems connect their wireless access points together wirelessly using a 3rd channel. Others ues hard wiring to connect the access points. So it all boils down to how much do you want to spend, how much work do you want to do to set it up, how big of a system do you need and how long do you expect it last. (New standards come out that are better than the old ones. There is a new standard being developed as I write this.)

Q: QuestionHow does the computer receive the signal from the wireless router do I need to buy some sort of anttena
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer The router has antenna's which "push" and "receive" data across your network to your computer and other network devices. Some routers have one antenna, some have 2, some have 6, etc. Some of them even have antenna's built inside the router so you can't see them. Your computer has a wireless card with has it's own built in antenna (which you can't see), and it communicates with the router. Together, your computer and router use their pre-existing antenna's to send data back and forth. So- the short answer to your questions is No. Unless you live in a large house (or have multiple walls/floors which can cause the signal to have trouble making it through), you do not need to buy some sort of antenna.

Q: QuestionIs the router DOCSIS 3.0 compatible?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Routers do not interface with DOCSIS but they will be able to network with a DOCSIS modem. Modems are responsible for receiving the signals from the cable line which is needed in order to get internet from a cable internet provider such as Xfinity. Modems are the ones that use DOCSIS. Routers on the other hand, are responsible for spreading internet access across multiple devices. For example, through wireless signals. In order to connect multiple computers to the internet in a home or office you will need both a modem and a router. I hope this helps!

Q: QuestionI get periodic 5 minute dropping of just my wireless signal, not the wired signal. Any ideas?
Asked by Drew.
- A:Answer Do you have other wireless devices in the home? Maybe getting interference from other electronic devices even from the neighbors. If you have a cordless phone in the home operating on the 2.4ghz it could be interferring also. I recommend going into wireless setup and change the channel it is operating on. Typically the wireless channel is set to auto. If it is try channel 11, 6, or 7 and see if that helps. Not sure what best channel is for 5g band, sorry... Good Luck!!!
