“Do I need to have service from Verizon,cablvision,spectrum,etc for this to work ? I’m trying to get WiFi without having to deal with these companies outrageous monthly bills”

Yes, it has to connect to some kind of fiber optic wiring thru your cable company, home phone line company or etc. It just doesn't connect to something in the air.
